Gabe Montague

Gabe Montague, a ninth grader from Newton, Massachusetts, has been composing music since he began piano lessons at age six.  Since then, Gabe has composed a number of pieces for solo piano, piano and double bass, various small string and wind ensembles, and four pieces for full orchestra.

In December of 2007, the Newton Symphony Orchestra premiered the first movement of Gabe’s symphony “The Explorer” as a feature of their Classical Idol concert and competition.

In May 2008, Gabe's piano piece, C Minor Nocturne, was selected as a winner of the Youth Composition Festival at University of Massachusetts, Lowell. In addition to numerous recitals, Gabe's work has also been featured in the Dinosaur Annex Music Ensemble Young Composers Festivals in 2010 and 2011.

Gabe studies piano with Margaret Bachelder of the New England Conservatory Preparatory Division and composition with Justin Casinghino, an affiliated artist in the MIT music theory department and Assistant Director of the Young Artist's Composition Program at BU’s Tanglewood Institute. Gabe also studies jazz theory and composition at the Rivers Conservatory Summer Jazz program and plays piano for the Newton North Jazz Band and Tiger Be-Bop vocal jazz group.  In addition to his musical pursuits, Gabe plays on his school soccer team and runs on the varsity track team.
